Liam Langan

Biography

Liam Langan is an English/Japanese writer. He’s lived in Singapore, Japan, England, and now resides in Saigon, Vietnam. This multicultural background and mixed-race identity have played a key part in shaping not only his understanding of the world, but also the types of stories he wants to tell. His debut novel, Neon Night, is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story following alter ego Jim Leary as he navigates his last year of high school in Tokyo—a city he calls home but has never really been a part of. Robert Whiting, bestselling author of You Gotta Have Wa and Tokyo Underworld” called the work, “A remarkable first novel by an emerging young talent. Evocative of Bright Lights, Big City. Liam Langan belongs in the same category as Jay McInerney.”

Besides Neon Night, Liam has also honed his craft through numerous freelance and contract-based roles. More recently, he’s co-founded District 0, an independent online media publication based in Saigon. As a writer, interviewer, and editor, Liam tells personal, honest, and narrative-driven pieces that show you the ‘why’ and ‘who’ behind the city, rather than the ‘what’ and ‘where’. As of May 2026, he’s profiled 40+ individuals and featured 25+ places on District 0, combining sharp observation and empathetic storytelling to craft pieces that are brimming with a sense of humanity.

When Tommy’s parents got divorced, his world flipped upside down. A lack of financial stability is one thing. Difficulty learning at school another. However, when your parents split, all of a sudden no problem seems to be able to compare with the magnitude of that painful separation. Tommy moved in with his mother. Stuffed into a small home with other family members, he didn’t feel like he had any room to breathe. In such moments, he found just how liberating art could be. He started with acting. He loved it because there was an innate freedom in the pursuit. By stepping into a role, he could don a character’s skin and in that process forget all the worries plaguing his actual life. Moreover, acting taught him how to compartmentalise his feelings. He couldn’t let the outside world affect him because the outside world didn’t exist. Only the here and now and the camera or audience looking his way. Nothing else mattered.
