There we had an unobstructed view of the conical hills, still fuzzy, standing together. I squinted, trying to bring them into focus. But they refused to look real. They could’ve easily been a life-size, full-scale illustration on white paper. I imagined sketching them – holding a pencil at a low angle using the side of the lead to shade the silhouettes in fuzzy grey – a technique my dad taught me when I was six that I went on to use in every drawing I made after, as drawings looked more realistic when blurry rather than in sharp lines. Even with perfect eyesight, we spend our lives unfocused. Our vision flooded with uncertainties, things hidden in plain sight. Next, I colored, only the sky a fiery orange, keeping the rest of the world monochrome, for I didn’t want to go wrong with colors.
