Third Culture Individuals

The great changes of the modern world have seen so many families shifting countries to seek fresh opportunities. This has resulted in many, many children growing up as Third Culture Individuals (TCIs)—raised in places where they’re visibly different from most other kids around them. A lot of these TCIs experience disquieting feelings of alienation or even trauma as they struggle to figure out where they truly belong. For these people, no matter whether they end up working in their adopted country or their country of origin, life always makes them feel like a misfit.

German-Malaysian TCI Fyiona Yong’s new book “How to Thrive as a Misfit”—our next Metro Writers release available internationally on Amazon and in Hong Kong bookstores soon—teaches readers how to turn the sense of adversity from feeling different into an advantage. Fyiona’s book is a personal guide that shows how the challenges of her own heritage gave her unique perspectives on how to succeed in situations where you stand out, whether that be for reasons of ethnicity or generation gap.

Editing Fyiona’s book has been a distinct honour for our editorial team. In sharing both her personal history as well as straightforward business lessons of value to readers of any race or age, Fyiona not only leads by example but provides new insights for managers and employees seeking new ways to thrive both professionally and in their everyday lives.
